Fans of Charlie Parker, and jazz in general, are starting their 5th annual 10-day festival.

The Charlie Parker Celebration includes a jazz crawl, chicken dinner and a kids jazz boot camp. Some heavy hitters will be there, including Ronald McFadden, Bobby Watson, and Tivon Pennicott.

"Take a Grammy-winning star and you stick him in with the locals, and magic happens, and most of these events are free," said John Nobles of KC Jazz Alive. "What we're trying to do is celebrate our local jazz infrastructure."

The celebration begins Thursday evening at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art with a panel discussion on how Charlie Parker changed modern jazz, and how the great saxophonist's influence is still shaping music.
