Changes in KCI terminal plan to require more time for construction

A new report shows KCI Airport will be larger than first envisioned, and it will take longer than expected to complete renovations.

The contractor, Edgemoor Infrastructure and Real Estate, explains the delay is necessary because they determined the new terminal will require 39 gates instead of the originally planned 35. Passenger traffic has grown more than what was forecast.

The terminal was set to open in the fall of 2021. As of Thursday, no one was committing to a firm completion date.

The expansion does not change the math, said Quinton Lucas, city councilman.

"There is no general fund money -- we're sticking to our promises," Lucas said. "The only people who pay for the new airport are people who use the new airport."

The full council will have to approve any changes in the construction schedule. Lucas still expects a ground breaking this year.
