North Kansas City, MO - A three-alarm fire that gutted a building in the center of town was caused by careless smoking, investigators said Wednesday.

And investigators said during a late-morning news conference the fire was accidental and there is no criminal investigation.

Someone had been smoking on the backside of the Pioneer building at Armour Road and Swift Avenue and failed to extinguish a cigarette properly, they said.

Fire investigators said gusting wind caused the fire to spread up a wall and into the attic of the building.

The fire was first noticed around 12:45pm Tuesday afternoon. It was eventually brought under control Tuesday evening, while firefighters continued to douse the site with water overnight and into Wednesday.

No injuries were reported.

The building is considered a total loss.  Thirteen businesses are displaced.
