KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- I-35 near 75th Street in Overland Park is well known as one of the worst bottle necks in the metro, and after years of terrible traffic and back ups, KDOT is taking on the issue.

If you have ever driven down Interstate 35 around 75th street in Overland Park, around rush hour, you know just how bad it is. Kelly Kultala, District I Public Affairs Manager for the Kansas Department of Transportation told KMBZ that in a few weeks, crews will start an expansion project.

"There's currently three lanes, this will expnd it to four lanes," Kutala said. "On I-35 between just south of 67th Street to just south of 75th Street."

Kultala said it will be a three phase project, and that I-35 will not close entirely, but there will be some closures.

"Closing the southbound on-ramp to I-35 from 75th Street in the southbound exit ramp to 75th Street from I-35," Kultala said, will be one of those closures.

Kultala said KDOT is advising commuters to detour over to Antioch and up to 87th Street, or vice versa.

Officials hope to have the project completed by the end of the year.
