A nine-year-old boy is dead after he was run over by a car Thursday evening around 23rd Street and Kensington Avenue in Kansas City.

Police say witnesses told them the boy tripped and fell in front of a westbound Chevy Impala. Some people say too many people fail to exercise caution when driving through the area.

"You hear the cars zooming by in the background," said Mary Piper, a neighbor. "Nobody seems to care that there's a speed limit right here."

The neighborhood has steep hills and steps in front of the homes. Police say the boy must have lost his balance.

The woman who was driving the car stayed at the scene and is cooperating with investigators.

"Kids don't think when a ball goes flying, they just run out and grab it," Piper said. "That could have been anybody's kid."
