Big 12 basketball tournament takes over downtown KC

Opening round games are Wednesday in the Big 12 Championship basketball tournament at Sprint Center in downtown Kansas City.

Thousands of fans will fill the arena, restaurants, hotels, clubs and shops. Kansas City has hosted the tournament every year since 2010.

"We are close to sold out, which is a little uncommon for us," said Cathy Nelson, president and chief executive officer of the Kansas City Sports Commission. "Typically, every year, we're completely sold out and it's the hardest ticket to get."

There are still some tickets available but fans can expect large crowds. The tournament offers more than basketball games.

"There is so much going on with sponsorship activation, tents, things to do for the kids," Nelson said. "Even if you don't have a ticket into they venue, there is something to do downtown."

Nelson suggests going online to purchase parking so fans can plan how they will get to the arena. Several parking lots are available for people who want to walk or take the Kansas City Streetcar.

The schedule begins with the play-in round Wednesday evening.
