Belton High School's new initiative was created in hopes of tying together the education and business communities, to address the workforce needs of the future.

The school is participating in Ford's Next Generation learning program. The goal is to encourage kids to think about their futures long before they need to decide on their careers. The idea is to have students take more active roles in their educations.

"That process will start in the 8th grade and into 9th grade, with a heavy emphasis on career inventories and site visits so they can see what the workplace looks like," said Stacy Yerkovich, director of academies.

Students will focus on project-based learning and team-building, skills they can use whether they pursue higher education or immediately enter the job market.
