Ax throwing hits the mark in KC's West Bottoms, expanding to Johnson County

Kansas City, MO - As far as businesses go, this one is rather simple. "We throw axes at wooden targets. Doesn't get much simpler than that, right?" says Matt Baysinger, co-owner.

Blade & Timber is the first, and the only, urban ax throwing facility in Kansas City, opening just a few months ago in the now-thriving West Bottoms.

The concept is the brainchild of the folks behind BreakoutKC, a live-action 'escape room' geared toward group entertainment.

"It's definitely one of the more fun ideas we've been dreaming up recently," said Ryan Henrich, co-owner.

The idea to open ax throwing lanes began nearly two years ago.

"We had seen a couple of ax throwing places pop up in Canada and London," said Ryan. "'Man! Let's build a test lane in our headquarters...'"

That fun lunchtime activity for staff turned into something more. "We said 'gosh, we think there's something here, an idea here'", says Matt. "The last 6 months or so we turned it from a warehouse hobby to a legitimate business."

The ax-throwing-turned-business has turned out so well they say, they're expanding into Johnson County in May, and they're in talks to open eight more locations around the country.

"When you throw the ax and it hits the target, it releases this visceral raw reaction," says Ryan. "You're going... 'man, I just nailed that. I just hit a bullseye, feels so good!'"
