For allergy and asthma doctors across the Kansas City area it's peak week.

The third week of September is considered the worst time of the year for allergies and asthma.

"The ragweek counts have been really high for the last three weeks, said Dr. Jay Portnoy at Children's Mercy Hospital, and a member of the Asthma and Allergy Network. "We're also seeing more mold in the air and a lot of kids are going to school and getting viral infections."

That combination of viruses and allergens can trigger serious breathing problems which could land people in the hospital.

"The problem with the fall allergy season, especially peak week, is that you get colds and allergies together, so you can't tell them apart because you have both," Portnoy said.

It is especially important right now for people with asthma to make sure they are using their inhalers regularly and taking allergy medications to keep the worst of the sneezing and sniffling at bay, Portnoy said.
